DesignAgency at the Interior Design Show West, September 19-22

Momofuku Toronto and the Shangri La Hotel were awarded the Award of Excellence in the Elements Category at the Toronto Urban Design Awards on September 11, more about 2013. The awards, held every other year, acknowledge the contributions that architects, designers, artists and city builders make to the overall creativity and livability of the City of Toronto.

Momofuku Toronto, as part of the Shangri La Hotel, engages the University streetscape through its unique public art piece, “Rising”. Created by Chinese artist Zhang Huan, the massive 33-foot tall and 65-foot long sculpture wraps the building in stainless steel tree roots and birds taking flight.

From within, immense windows that span floor to ceiling connect the dining experience to the urban environment outside. The second floor dining room offers stunning views of University Avenue, inviting both those outside and in to gaze through the walls of the glass “ice cube” by architect James K.M. Cheng.

We are thrilled to share this unique award with Hariri Pontarini Architects, James K.M. Cheng and artist Zhang Huan.

DesignAgency will attend Interior Design Show West, September 19 -22 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, where we will participate in several speaking panels and presentations.

Join us on Friday, September 20th at 5:00 PM for The Evolution of Design: A Conversation with DesignAgency, Moderated by Kelly Deck where we will explore the many contributing factors that have shaped the evolution of design in recent times, from global economic conditions to changing environmental priorities to lifestyle perceptions.

The partners will each lead a breakout session earlier in the day for Trade Day registrants, as follows:

  • Redefining Design

    Allen Chan
What is the cultural importance of design? How does the role of the designer continue to change? How does the world around us shape and influence the industry of design? These questions will be explored as Chan examines how design continues to redefine itself.

  • The Emergence of Luxury

    Matt Davis
By examining recent projects including the Shangri-La Toronto, The Imperial Plaza and The Perry, Davis will explore the complex experience of luxury as a series of simple elements. The interaction of materials, the engagement of the senses and the pleasure of the ordinary are just a few aspects of luxury that will be covered in this study of the redefinition of the refinement of living.

  • The Evolution of the Boutique Hotel

    Anwar Mekhayech
With globalization came the refinement of the boutique hotel to accommodate a changing economic landscape. Through an examination of Generator Hostel projects in Copenhagen, Dublin, Barcelona and London, Mekhayech will lead a discussion on the hottest trends in boutique hotel design that include practical yet stylish design developments.
