DW Alexander is named after a local historical figure – one of Toronto’s largest leather traders who owned the building that now houses the bar with his namesake. The design adopts the industrial feel of this 19th century warehouse building, and mixes it with a modern bespoke feel. The subterranean rooms have the feel of an underground speakeasy and are divided into two parts: the library lounge, and the entrance bar. Rich cobalt blue paneling connects the two areas, providing warmth and colour to the highly textured space. The articulated seating and layout maximize the lounge’s 2,200 sq.ft, while the dark tones, rich patterns, and carbonized wood panels provide private and public zones for both intimate and social gatherings.
